Overland Travel from Thailand to Malaysia
The original plan was to travel to Koh Lipe and then on to Malaysia by boat but by May the boats have stopped running between Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe. The plan was adjusted to travel by bus to Satun and take the ferry to Langkawi, Malaysia. Here’s what it looked like.
Koh Lanta to Trang:
Shuttle pick up from hotel in Koh Lanta
450THB/ $16.50 Cdn
approximately 2 hours
Trang: the drop off is a full fledged bus station with food and bathrooms. There were shuttles to Satun but we opted for the public bus
Trang to Satun:
Public bus:
100 THB/ $3.65 Cdn; buy your ticket on the bus
approximately 3 and 3/4 hours; no AC.
Satun to Tammalang Pier:
Taxi:
100THB/ $3.65 Cdn
10- 15 minutes
There are cabs waiting where you are dropped off in Satun. Our guy was not up for bargaining
Satun to Langkawi:
Ferry:
300THB/ $11 Cdn
Departure 4 pm; Arrival 5 pm
There is immigration for departing Thailand so have you departure card filled out and ready to hand in. Be sure you are not over the 30 day tourist visa limit.
Langkawi, Malaysia
There is immigration for entering Malaysia. Overland there was no need to show our onward travel. Malaysia tourist visa is for 90 days.
