It’s no secret that Portugal’s Algarve is full of spectacular beaches. So it’s a tough pick for the best beaches in the Algarve. If you love unspoiled, wild nature at its best, get to the western Algarve beaches and do some exploring around Aljezur and Carrapateira. Bring a picnic, a book, a bottle of port and a surfboard.
My pick for the best beaches in the Algarve? Praia da Amoreira, Praia da Bordeira and Praia do Amado
These beaches were discovered on a day trip from the seaside fishing village of Carvoeiro on the Algarve.
Sweeping expanses of beach.
Crashing waves.
Salty spray.
Spectacular views.
I knew I was meant to go there.
In the presence of these earthly elements, I am insanely content.
Is it expansiveness?
Or the pure essence of wild, raw nature?
Is it the assault on my senses?
Perhaps it’s the sheer freedom to let loose and play.
Whatever the reason, I believe it is not humanly possible to experience anything but joy on these beaches.
Start the day in Aljezur, a sleepy little town topped by a castle reputed to be from the 10th Century but possibly dating back to Roman times.
Climbing the road to the castle reveals sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Chances are when visiting, you might be the only person.
Best Beaches In The Algarve | Praia da Amoreira
A short drive north from Aljezur is Praia da Amoreira, located at the mouth of the Aljezur River in Vicentine Coast Natural Park. It’s the perfect beach for listening to the crashing surf and picnicking. Have you ever topped off a picnic with a sip or two of port? When in Portugal, it seems so appropriate.
Best Beaches In The Algarve | Praia da Bordeira
Drive 20 km south from Aljezur to find Praia da Bordeira.
Heading south, this beach marks the beginning of an outstanding drive or coastal walk ending at Praia do Amado. Both rugged beaches are within walking distance of the small village, Carrapateira. Keen hikers can access The Fishermen’s Trail, a circular day hike, that starts in Carrapateira. Not a hiker? Do these words excite you… “Surf’s up!” Carrapateira is one of the perfect bases for surfing Portugal’s Atlantic coast.
Arriving at Praia da Bordeira, the seabirds beckon.
The river demands bare feet and a wading excursion.
Rippled lines on the copper-coloured sand dunes are meant to be followed.
Extensive and expansive, they transform into the seabed, disappearing under the waves.

Best Beaches In The Algarve | Praia do Amado
The striking coastline continues as you leave Praia da Bordeira heading south to Praia do Amado. Limestone cliffs provide a backdrop to this stunning sandy expanse.
I am joyful, at peace and I want to linger in this space.
I quietly make a mental note to return.
Would you enjoy these wild, unspoiled beaches?
“Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.”
Khalil Gibran
I hope you enjoy these best beaches in the Algarve as much as I did.
Until next time,

Wow. Those beaches are simply stunning. And I love that you had them all to yourself! Beaches and water are always relaxing to me, but even more so when I’ve got the space to myself and can just sit, quiety observing and listening to the sounds of the water. Your photos are beautiful and make me feel like I’m there with you!
Alison Browne says
Thanks Cynthia! I think that was part of the magic of the day – the space to reflect and just be!

The rippled lines are definitely impressive so that would probably be the reason Praia Da Border would be at the top of my list. Also, that is a really cool castle and it’s a huge bonus for me that I might be the only person there, I love when that happens. Having port on a picnic in Portugal is exactly something I would like to do and will do when I go to Portugal. It’s a perfect bucket list item!
Alison Browne says
Yes, it was an absolute bonus having the beaches and castle without others around. A perfect way to soak up the seaside energy!

Well yes, the HITravelTales team loves unspoiled, wild nature so those western Algarve beaches, especially Aljezur and Carrapateira sound right up our alley. A picnic with a book (can it be a book on my iPad I wonder?) with some cheese, meat, bread and of course a few bottles of wine, including port, and a nice dark chocolate would be a must. Portugal here we come! 😉
Alison Browne says
That picnic sounds like the perfect match for those beaches! 🙂 Plan on spending the whole day!

I didn’t realize Portugal had such beautiful beaches! Praia do Amado looks amazing. We don’t have any trips to Portugal planned yet, but I’ll have to consider it!
Alison Browne says
I loved Portugal so much I can’t wait to go back! And those beaches….!

Stunning photos! I’ve been lucky to see quite a bit of northern Portugal, but I’ve never made it down to the Algarve (not yet, anyone!) I’m a sucker for wild coastlines and unspoilt beaches and these pictures look absolutely dreamy. I can already imagine myself there with a book and beach bag and a big ol’ smile on my face 🙂
Alison Browne says
Thanks Erica! If you are a sucker for wild coastlines you won’t be disappointed by these beaches!!

The coastline is so beautiful and I love those rippled lines. I enjoy visiting places that aren’t overly crowded so this looks like a great destination for me. Thanks for the tips about the car rental. Very useful information 🙂
Alison Browne says
You’re welcome! It was easy driving around Portugal. I believe the uncrowded factor holds huge appeal! It’s a bit rugged and thoroughly enjoyable!

Such beautiful photos! The beaches all seemed so different despite being so close to each other. I think I would like the surfing beach best, but because of the short distance between them, I would try to visit two or all three if I have the chance!
Alison Browne says
Thank you! It was fun to play around with the camera! The surfing beach was amazing. Maybe just a whole day hanging there would be a good call!
Melody Pittman says
The beaches are beautiful, but then again, most of Portugal is just that. I find it such an underrated country. The pic of you standing on the beach is my favorite. Sheer joy on your face. 😉
Alison Browne says
Aw! Thanks! There was something about those beaches that had me in my happy place! I can’t wait to get back to explore more of that beautiful country!
Joshua Schweigert says
Absolutely stunning photography. Seeing how beautiful this area is makes me want to jump in a plane and head there now.
Alison Browne says
Thanks, Joshua! It was fun to play in the sand and shoot photos! I know… I need to go back !!!
