Travelling France
By Region

There’s Paris and then there’s the rest of France. Regions that are full of vineyards and mountains, fishing villages and the sea, lavender and hilltop medieval towns. France’s sheer variety is astounding and yet there is a timeless familiarity wherever you go. Le Fromagerie on the main cobbled road, the café where a giant café au lait can be ordered and savoured, streetside tables where locals and visitors alike visit and enjoy regional gastronomy. Churches are everywhere. The tiniest town has a towering cathedral where people gather. And always there is the familiar clank of the pétanque balls.

Come along travelling France with me to the various regions  and see what is to be discovered.

Bordeaux and Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the largest region in France. The Dordogne, Limousin and the Lot regions are heavily forested with oak and walnut trees and rivers wind past medieval villages. You could just get lost in the loveliness. Head further west and find the bustling modern city of Bordeaux. And still further west? Beaches and the highest dune in Europe are waiting for you. So much exploring to do in this region.

Travelling France: La Bretagne (Brittany)

I was lucky enough to housesit in Brittany one winter and fell for her charms. The rugged coastline is unforgettable along with walled cities like Saint-Malo and medieval towns such as Dinan. The traditions of Breton culture are evident especially in the gastronomic galettes accompanied by a cold local cider. My love of Brittany has seen me returning over and over to further discover this amazing region of France. Read all my insider tips on travelling France to this great region!

Travelling France: La Normandie (Normandy)

What a region to discover. The World War II D-Day beaches and memorials to soldiers. Apple trees and Calvados. White cows and Camembert. Stunning cliffs and wide expansive beaches. Small villages bursting with history. It’s no wonder La Normandie is a favourite with the French and tourists from all over the world.

Provence-Alpes-Côte-D’Azur

Provence. Just the name summons visions of hilltop towns, lavender, a laid back lifestyle and gorgeous scenery painted by the likes of Cézanne and Van Gogh. Add to the mix the cities of Marseille and Aix-en-Provence, seaside towns like Cassis and the Gorges du Verdon and, quite frankly, you just might never leave this region.

The Rest Of France

Travelling France. You could explore her for a lifetime and still only scratch the surface of L’Hexagone, this France’s nickname based on her shape. These Travelling France articles cover gems in various regions of L’Hexagone.
